Free Good Advice for SEO

  • Don't take the web designer's word they know what SEO is all about.  Google them for web design or SEO locally and see if they appear.  If they don't, pick someone else!
  • Don't allow your website to be built totally in Flash.  You may as well burn your money or give it to charity as you'll then need to spend a small fortune paying for print or Internet ads to publicize your website.  Flash is okay as long as it is kept contained and allows text to be displayed on the page.
  • Content is King for search engines.  This is why Flash is bad.  Flash is a collection of nice images that scroll.  Search engines are getting better at reading tags in Flash but that nowhere near compares to the usefulness of text
  • Try to think about what people may search in order to buy your goods or services.  Don't concentrate on your business name so much.  Handy if your name is A Dentist and you are a dentist but not so handy if your name is WE Hurt!
  • If your business is mainly local like a hotel or dentist don't worry so much about blogs, Twitter etcetera.  You have to remember how many hours in the day there are and think how many people locally will get benefit from your blogging & Twittering.  Facebook helps for existing customers.  This will mean the end for newsletters in some industries but hey-ho.  Every cloud has a silver lining.
  • Concentrate on one subject per page if possible and try to make each page feel like a Home Page.  People will search for you and the search engine will take the searcher to the page it thinks most relevant to the search.  If they arrive at a page they aren't interested in as it was an afterthought people will quickly leave.
